The Padawan Princess
to keep her cozy
Story by Ginger Kaderabek
Once upon a time, there was a brave Jedi student named Ellie. Padawan Ellie was known as one of the master’s best students, but what people didn’t know was her secret: She was really a princess. Her father, a brave soldier, had rescued her mother, Princess Stephanie, when the evil forces took over the castle. Her parents had left her with the Jedi to keep her safe, but she knew that some day she would help them defeat the enemy. That was why she worked so hard practicing her light saber.
Her father had wrapped her in her special quilt when he came to take her to safety. The quilt, which looked like her planet’s flag, was all she had from her days as a princess, and sometimes, when no one was watching, she hugged it and pretended her mother was coming to tuck her in. She knew they wanted her to be safe and well and that they would come for her as soon as they could, but sometimes it was hard to be brave. She knew that the quilt was made with love, and it made her feel better to hold it.
Finally, her wait was over. When she woke up with her mother leaning over her, at first she thought it was a dream. “We are here at last, my little princess,” her mother said. “We’re going to take back our kingdom.” When she went to say goodbye to her teacher, she was sad. He said to her, “I know you are not yet a knight, but you are a fighter. Here is a light saber. I know you will use it well.”
Princess Ellie did have a chance to use her light saber, in the last fight for the castle, but her quilt became a legend. As they approached the castle, she waved the quilt above her head. Someone saw it and yelled, “The princess has come home.” As the word passed from person to person, they fought harder for their princess and soon the battle was won.
The End
