Dragonfly Princess
The Dragonfly Princess Learns her ABCs
Once upon a time there was dragonfly princess named Emeline Jayne. Her dragonfly parents, Miracleman and the Empress, were very smart and so they easily passed on those smart genes to Princess Emeline. Princess Emeline hatched before dragonfly nymphs usually hatch. She flew before dragonflies normally fly. But, most importantly, Princess Emeline talked before dragonflies normally talk. Before she even turned two, she was saying whole sentences and talking back to her mom and dad. Miracleman and the Empress knew they had their hands full.
When Emeline turned two, Miracleman and the Empress decided it was time for her to learn her ABCs. They tried the ABCs song. They tried books. They tried pictures, but nothing worked! They didn’t know how to teach her because Emeline didn’t want to learn her ABCs. Then one day, the Empress had an idea. First, she picked out some of Emeline’s favorite things that started with each letter. Then, all day, she would point out Emeline’s favorite toys and stories and the letters they started with. Eventually Emeline caught on and began to love her ABCs. She was so good at saying them. She would say…
“A” is for the angels above.
“B” is for the birdhouses in the yard.
“C” is for the cats at home.
“D” is for dragonflies like ME!
“E” is for Easter eggs that come with candy.
“F” is for pretty flowerpots.
“G” is for the garden full of flowers.
“H” is for the house we live in.
“I” is for green ivy.
“J” is for jack-o-lanterns at Halloween.
“K” is for the kites we fly at the beach.
“L” is for the ladybugs we eat.
“M” is for the moon high up in the sky.
“N” is for the needle mom uses to sew.
“O” is for our flag, old glory.
“P” is for posies, my favorite bouquet.
“Q” is for the quilt in my crib.
“R” is for the beautiful rainbow after it rains.
“S” is for the yummy strawberries we eat in the summertime.
“T” is for the pretty teacups for my tea parties with the other
dragonflies.
“U” is for the umbrellas we use to stay dry in the rain.
“V” is for the valentines I send to let people know I love them.
“W” is for the juicy watermelon we eat.
“X” is for the Xmas tree we put up and decorate with ornaments at
Christmas time.
“Y” is for the yarn that makes sweaters.
“Z” is for pretty red zinnias.
But her favorite was “‘D’ is for DRAGONFLIES like ME!” She loved being Emeline the Dragonfly Princess who knew her ABCs.
Every night, Emeline would go through her ABCs as she fell asleep. She was a very smart dragonfly, with very smart genes. Miracleman and the Empress knew not to push her to the next level, though, of making words. What they did not know is that Princess Emeline dreamed of words every night. And, each morning, she woke up with great hope that that day was the day that she and her mom and dad would make flying words in the sky.
One day soon they did. They flew and drew all of the words that Emeline loved—angels and birdhouses and cats and DRAGONFLIES! And Miracleman, the Empress, and Princess Emeline all lived happily ever after, drawing words in the sky, for all to read and love and learn.
The End.
